Stik-It Exhibit

Artist Statement-

This exhibit represents a new bend in my art expression. It was about a year ago when I was inspired with the idea for a collage show.

I was taking inventory for a show I was pulling together in the Spring of 2006 when I realized that this particular genre of art occasionally was being expressed in my work. What struck me was my first collage experience, about six years ago, produced minimal passion on my behalf however; I received good reviews from others on it. I framed that first piece and it continues to hang in my house. It still draws interest from some people when they view it and over time I have gained a deeper appreciation for it and realize it opened a new direction for me.

Having my curiosity and interest piqued, I began to explore and visualize how to express this alternative style in to new work. I culled my portfolios and studio for older work, scraps or unfinished starts of paintings that became the foundation for many of the pieces in this show. These include “Carnival”, “Calder Like”, “Red Iris” and “Finding the Forest Series”.

Many of the collage or “Stik-It” pieces in this show involved deliberately creating or constructing multi dimensional, shapes and layers from these old and forgotten pieces. The end result for me is a representation of pieces that have progressed into a new piece with more control than traditional watercolor painting. Of course, my interest in color, nature, and landscapes continue to appear as a theme in my work and this show.

As this art was made whole by the collaboration of parts and pieces so was this show- I want to thank the artists from the studio groups I paint with and D. Flecther Davis for the encouragement. I couldn’t have completed it without the support of my wonderful wife and daughters for their inspiration and honesty.

And finally, I want to thank you the viewer, for taking the time to look at the work hanging here. So, “Stik” around and enjoy “It” for awhile.
